At Dakota Adventure Supply, we’re committed to creating gear that stands the test of time, blending functionality with heritage-inspired design. To help us tackle our next big project, we’ve brought on Lucas Greer, a product designer with a passion for the outdoors and a deep curiosity about the people who use our gear. Lucas is jumping in headfirst to lead the design of a new heritage-inspired backpack, and we couldn’t be more excited to have him on board.
In this Q&A, Lucas shares what drew him to the outdoors, his approach to designing gear, and what excites him most about joining Dakota Adventure Supply.
Jeff: What first drew you to the outdoors?
Lucas Greer: Growing up in Seattle, I was lucky to have easy access to the mountains, parks, and forests. My family spent a lot of time in the Cascades hiking, camping, and skiing, and my childhood home was right next to a large park. I spent hours building forts and dams in the creek—it was a playground that really shaped my connection to nature.
Jeff: What’s your go-to adventure?
Lucas: It depends on the season. In the summer and fall, I love trail running, especially a trail here in Northern Utah that leads to a 1,500-year-old Jardine Juniper tree. There’s a bench in front of it that’s perfect for taking a break and soaking in the view. In the winter and spring, I trade my running shoes for cross-country skis. I love night skiing under a full moon—it’s a surreal experience.
Jeff: Who’s in your crew?
Lucas: I’ve been lucky to meet a lot of friends who share my love for the outdoors, and they’re great for last-minute plans. I also enjoy solo adventures, but there’s something special about being out there with others and sharing those experiences.
Jeff: Why is time outdoors important to you?
Lucas: For me, the outdoors is a mix of challenge and peace. I love pushing myself physically, but I also find it humbling to feel so small in the middle of such vast beauty. It’s like nature resets your perspective.
Jeff: What’s your favorite piece of gear?
Lucas: My Garmin InReach Mini. It’s a compact satellite communicator that lets me stay connected with friends and family during backcountry adventures. It was a high school graduation gift from my parents, and it’s been a lifesaver on countless trips.
Jeff: What excites you most about joining Dakota Adventure Supply?
Lucas: The chance to design gear that truly connects with people. My design philosophy starts with user research—understanding what customers value and need—and then crafting products that exceed those expectations. This new heritage-inspired backpack project is an amazing opportunity to build something that combines timeless style with modern functionality. I can’t wait to dive deeper and bring it to life.
Jeff: What does comradery mean to you?
Lucas: Comradery is what makes outdoor experiences so memorable. Without distractions, you really bond over shared challenges, laughs, and stories. It’s about being fully present and creating moments that stick with you long after the trip is over.
Jeff: Any advice for others looking to get outside?
Lucas: Don’t worry about having the perfect gear—just start with what you have and get out there. I also recommend adventuring with more experienced people. You’ll learn so much from them and gain confidence in your own abilities.
Lucas’s passion for the outdoors and his thoughtful approach to design are already making an impact here at Dakota Adventure Supply. We can’t wait to share more about the development of our heritage-inspired backpack as it takes shape under Lucas’s guidance.
