Interview by Jeff Hayward
Today, we're catching up with Bryan, a longtime customer and big supporter of what we're building here at Dakota Adventure Supply. Bryan typically sends us photos of his epic adventures and lounging on beautiful beaches - and we're here for it! Bryan had some really thoughtful words to share, so let's get on to the interview.
Jeff: Alright, Bryan—let’s kick this off the old-fashioned way. Tell me where you’re from and a little bit about your background. What led you to a life spent outside?
Bryan: My name’s Bryan and I’m originally from Rochester, New York. I’ve always felt at home outdoors—from childhood hikes to a career as a federal law enforcement ranger with the National Park Service. Now, as a special agent with the U.S. government, I’ve carried that love of nature around the world. Whether on duty or off-grid, the wild has always been where I recharge, reflect, and feel most alive.
Jeff: When you’ve got time to get away, what’s the kind of trip you always come back to? What’s your go-to adventure?
Bryan: For me, it’s setting up camp deep in the woods with my wife and our dogs. Nothing beats the ritual—crackling fire, crisp air, gear that’s been with me for years, and waking up to silence you can feel. We always seem to find ourselves drawn back to the mountains, whether it’s the woods behind our house or somewhere way off the beaten path.
Jeff: Sounds like your crew is a tight one. Who’s usually by your side when you’re out there?
Bryan: My wife is my constant partner in adventure, and our dogs are never far behind. They bring energy, humor, and loyalty to every trip. Whether we’re bushwhacking through remote terrain or just enjoying a quiet night under the stars, having them with me makes it all the more meaningful.
Jeff: You’ve had some heavy jobs and seen some serious parts of the world. What does that time outdoors give you that nothing else can?
Bryan: The outdoors reminds me of who I am. It’s where I find clarity, especially after the intensity of work and foreign travel. It humbles you, centers you, and forces you to stay present. Out there, it’s just you, your people, and the world as it was meant to be.
Jeff: We all have that one piece of gear that sticks around longer than it probably should. What’s the one item you always pack?
Bryan: My go-to is a well-worn, folding knife I’ve had since my ranger days. It’s not flashy, but it’s dependable—just like good gear should be. It’s been with me from my time in Vermont to many, many countries overseas, and it’s earned every scratch and nick.
Jeff: Let’s talk memory lane—what’s the one outdoor trip that sticks in your head more than the rest?
Bryan: Last year, my wife and I hiked for 19 days in Argentina and Chile. We had a lot of the trails to ourselves most of the time—no cell service, just raw wilderness, and quiet. It’s the kind of moment you carry with you forever.
Jeff: We talk about “comradery” a lot around here—what does that word mean to you, especially in the outdoors?
Bryan: There’s something about sharing a fire or weathering a storm with others that forges a bond you can’t replicate anywhere else. Out there, it’s not about small talk—it’s about trust, shared silence, and looking out for one another. The best memories are the ones built from blisters, laughter, and that first sip of coffee on a cold morning or that warm meal at the end of the day.
Jeff: For the folks who want to spend more time outside but feel overwhelmed or don’t know where to start—what would you say to them?
Bryan: Don’t overthink it—just start. The perfect gear or destination doesn’t matter as much as showing up. Learn by doing, respect the land, and invest in quality items that will grow with you. And when in doubt: slow down, breathe deep, and look around—you’re exactly where you’re supposed to be.
